Creating a Child-Friendly Environment: Art at Their Level...

I've been reading MommyLife for nearly a year now and finally have two of her books Mommy Teach Me and Mommy Teach Me to Read. I have been hungrily reading bits and pieces of both books (as I have the time!) so that I can start to implement some of her ideas in our home and with our 20 month old daughter.

One of the things Barbara Curtis advocates doing is to create a child friendly environment. As a former art major, the first of her suggestions I wanted to try was putting art at our children's eye level. Since we rent, it took me some time to figure out a way to do this without putting nails in odd places.

I finally decided to print some 4" x 6" prints of art I liked from the computer and then I put them into magnetic plastic frames that stores sell to put on the refrigerator.

Using a little hot glue, a mini clothespin, and ribbon scraps, I was able to hang the frames from our banister spokes quite easily. The nice thing about this method is that it is completely removable and easily changed! I also really like the size of the frames because they will fit postcards... a nice feature for when we get a chance to visit museums or other interesting places.

Emma, what a lovely idea! I'm going to file this away for future use. Thanks!

Brilliant! If we ever move again, I'm going to remember this. You've got me thinking, though, how I can adapt this idea for our playroom.

I'm a fan of Montessori style of teaching, (being a former early childhood educator myself.) I love your unique take on this idea.- (the feminine touch you added, with the ribbons.) I just posted my list for the week for Commitment to Loveliness. Sorry it's a little late. I was wondering if you could share with us a little about the meaning behind Ash Wednesday, and Lent. I know alot of Christian denominations share in Advent durring the Christmas holidays, but not so much with Lent. The Lord has been leading me to scripture lately on being "holy." And honestly, I feel the need to prepare my heart and observe this time of year differently some how this year. I always fast on Good Friday, but I feel the need to do something more...I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks - Tiffany Blessings on your day!

This is a wonderful idea! I have a little set of postcards from Williamsburg's spring garden and have been meaning to get them out on a little clothesline or some sort of display for Peapod. :o) Once we arrive at our new location, I really hope to set up our home more Montessori style, complete with lots of beauty of course.
