Living and Learning: September 1st
On My Bedside Table: I recently went through my collection of vintage Victoria magazines and fell back in love with all the beautiful imagery within the pages. I was inspired to get the August issue just days before it left newsstands (you can still order them online from their website!) And am seriously considering a subscription. One of my favorite features in the nineties was the fashion articles, so I was pleased that fashion was included. I love the style of romantic Victorian flair added to modern clothing. Hopefully the fashion spreads will now be a regular feature in forthcoming issues!
Listening: The India Hicks podcast was recently recommended by @habituallychic and I am really enjoying it! India Hicks sits down with her mother, Prince Phillip's cousin, to talk about her childhood among royalty. I listen via Spotify.
On My Needles: I'm still knitting away on my striped shawl. It will be great to be working on it as the weather cools down!
Seasonal Delights: I began working on my Autumnal Bucket List yesterday afternoon and am so looking forward to crisp apples, choosing pumpkins and chrysanthemums, baking treats, and trips to our favorite gardens and faires.
Out and About: We took a lovely late afternoon walk yesterday. Now that the tourists are starting to head home and the sun is less scorching, I hope to do more little outings like this.

One Dress, Coming Right Up
Our daughter's going to try to sew her own Pascha
(Easter) dress this year with her grandmother's help. This white cotton
fabric is for the slip. The dress itself will be made from dotted swiss
fabric that should be arriving next week. I can't wait to see the
finished product!

Living and Learning for September
Here's my very first Living and Learning vlog on YouTube! In this video
I cover what's in my knitting basket, some fashion inspiration, what
I'm reading and watching, and what I hope to bake this month.
In My Knitting Basket: Shale Blanket in Cascade 220 in the Shire colorway
Inspiration: Maxi Dress in Dark Green
On My Bedside Table: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and
In the Kitchen: Sour Cream Apple Pie, Apple Crisp, Applesauce
(also, I just checked the prices for Fall Fest and it is $12 per person, not $6 or $7 like I thought!)

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead
In My Knitting Basket: I have neglected my knitting quite a bit these past weeks. I have half of a Charlotte Beret on my needles and am determined to get it finished this week!
Watching: I've finished Fraiser (sob!), so now I find myself casting about for something new to occupy my time. I think I may rewatch Foyle's War!
On My Bedside Table: I am in the midst of listening to The Diary of a Provincial Lady, which is hilarious! I'm also reading my final Elizabeth Fair book, The Mingham Air.
In Pursuit of Beauty: I have been trying to take the children somewhere inspiring every week for the past few months and on a whim, I decided that a visit to nearby lavender fields was to be this week's adventure. A bouquet of freshly picked lavender is just heavenly!
Kitchen and Pantry: As I mention last week, the children and I went blueberry picking and have quite a few blueberries stored up for the cooler months. Now that the fast is over, however, I don't think that I can resist the siren call of a blueberry galette!

Church in the Home
This is an extremely interesting video put out by the Catholic News Service on the growth of Orthodox Christianity in Russia. It's worth a watch!
My Wardrobe
I
have added the final piece to my autumn/winter wardrobe and cannot wait
for it to come in the mail. I bought a pair of evergreen corduroy
trousers from Land's End. They are back-ordered, but should be arriving
in early November, which is not too long to wait.
On My Bedside Table
Though I am usually a one book at a time kind of person, I began two this past weekend: Affairs at Thrush Green and What She Ate: Six Remarkable Women and the Food that Tells Their Stories. It's going to be hard for me to choose what to read each night!
In My Knitting Basket
I
finally finished my grey Amelie socks and immediately cast on to a
plain pair of striped ones. I'm amazed at how quickly socks go with
just stockinette stitches. Seeing each different color stripe is so
exciting... it's hard to stop knitting each night!
Watching
Have you seen the trailer for the new film, Goodbye Christopher Robin? It looks wonderful!

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead
In the Kitchen
I have been churning out autumnal foods: stew, chicken pot pie, biscuits, apple cake, etc. One thing that I haven't made yet is Alicia's sour cream apple pie. I think that I will have to remedy that this week!
Watching
Have you seen the trailer for the new Murder on the Orient Express movie?
On My Bedside Table
I'm reading my way through the Thrush Green series. They are such comforting stories, so I really relish my little visits to the Cotswolds.
Of General Interest
I spotted this video on a friend's Facebook page and was fascinated by it!
In My Knitting Basket
I'm sure that you will not be surprised to find that I have yet to finish my grey Amelie sock. Knitting it has been dragging on for such a long time, but the end is in sight: two more repeats of the pattern and then it is on to the toe. I can't wait to wear these socks!

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead...
In My Knitting Basket
I am slowly but surely working on my second grey Amelie Sock. My sister will be visiting next week and I am determined to have the pair completed by then so that I can work on a new project while she's here.
Watching
Porldark is back!
On My bedside Table
I am firmly entrenched in the Miss Read section of my bookcase. I whipped through Village Diary and Winter in Thrush Green. Next up is News from Thrush Green.
Kitchen and Pantry
We have a drawer full of apples from our visit to the orchard a week or so ago. I am longing to make a loaf of Apple Bread this week. I clipped the recipe from The Wall Street Journal a few years ago and it has become an autumn favorite!
Inspiration
I have been a fan of Jennifer Scott for years, but I have been very impressed with her recent videos. She's tackled some hot topics lately, encouraged me to try a few new things, and has launched a very affordable e-course. She is traveling around Europe with her family right now and the footage and photographs that she has shared are breathtaking.

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead
In My Garden
My roses continue to delight me! I do need to give them a little tender care this week... they've developed some black spot, so I need to remove and burn the infected leaves and spray some fungicide on the bushes to prevent it from returning. I also would like to prune my hydrangea bush and "water dry" the blooms. Finally, while on the hunt for chrysanthemums in the perfect shade for the front porch, I spotted a large and healthy eucalyptus plant at the nursery for two dollars! I snapped it right up and just need to give it a nice pot and a place on the patio.
Inspiration
I absolutely love following Rebekah Markewich on Instagram and was thrilled when she mentioned that she had resumed blogging. Matushka Rebekah's photography is stunning and I love the beautiful and peaceful atmosphere that she has created on her social media accounts.
Watching
I really enjoyed this video on Getting Dressed in the 18th Century:
In the Kitchen
I thought that the days of peach galettes were gone until next July, but then my friend, Lila, gave me six gorgeous and fragrant peaches on Friday and that's all I've been dreaming of since. I think that I'll make one this afternoon!
On My Bedside Table
Lately, I have felt drawn to read a mystery and have found just the thing: The Complete Stories of Miss Marple. I think that Miss Marple just might be my favorite lady detective! Agatha Christie wrote quite a few books about Miss Marple, so I have lots to look forward to!

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead...
Watching
I'm looking forward to the new season of The Crown in December, so I was thrilled to spot this little video on my Facebook feed this morning:
On My Bedside Table
I am slowly but surly reading through the Emily of NEw Moon books. They are a pure joy to read... dare I say that I like them even better than the Anne books?
Learning
I'm putting the finishing touches on our lesson plans for the new homeschool year. This piece in the New York Times was timely, as I am hoping to add poetry memorization to our learning time this year: Memorize That Poem.
In My Knitting Basket
It will be no surprise that I have neglected my knitting for over a week now. Whenever things get hectic, my knitting is the first thing to drop off. I'm still working on a third pair of Amelie socks in some charcoal sock yarn that my sister gave me.
Inspiration
I recently came across Lainier Ivester's blog after having lost touch with it for a few years. It was been a joy to read her words again. Though she recently suffered through the tragedy of loosing her home, she has retained her faith and has been able to continue to see the beauty in the world.

Living and Learning: The Week Ahead
In the News
I loved reading High Tea, Afternoon Tea, Elevensies: English Tea Times for Dummies. Apparently, Tea Tuesday is a regular feature on NPR!
On My Bedside Table
I first read L.M. Montgomery's Anne books as a new mother when my friend, Courtney, sent me the entire series (plus a few other Montgomery favorites). I always intended to read the Emily books, and finally bit the bullet and ordered them all this weekend after seeing the gorgeous cover of Emily of New Moon on Instagram. I can't wait until they arrive!
In My Knitting Basket
There is a nice stack of Nineteen Hundred House Dishcloths that I was able to finish during the end of May and early part of June, and I still have a bit of cotton yarn left to knit a few more in the coming weeks. Also on my needles currently, is a pair of Amelie socks that have been languishing for far too long. I'd like to finish those soon so that I can start using a skein of the palest pink sock yarn I bought myself for Pascha!
Watching
The current Masterpiece lineup on Sunday nights is pretty stellar: Grantchester, My Mother and Other Strangers, and Tennison. I like to savor these shows by recording them and watching a little bit each night of the week.
In the Kitchen
I found an etched glass cake dome for my cake stand the other day in an antique shop and am really looking forward to baking a two tier Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting for the feast of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29th so that I can use it.

Church in the Home
A few years ago Laura created a one page printable life of Saint Mary of Egypt that we loved using prior to attending The Canon of
Saint Andrew with the Life of Saint Mary of Egypt. Print some out for your family and bring a few to church to pass out!
Listening
Did you know that you can listen to the BBC Radio radio through the computer or through their free phone app? I only found out last week and am already addicted! My favorite program so far is Radio 3's Classical Breakfast show. It's two and a half hours of music and educational tidbits. I start in in the morning and listen to it at various intervals during the whole day.
In the Post
Lucy from Purl Two Together has outdone herself yet again! I bought a ready-made tea cosy from her shop for my sister a few weeks ago and was so taken with it, I ordered a custom made one for myself. It arrived today and I just love it! If you are in the market for some hand-knits, pop over to her etsy shop!
Watching
Last night I stayed up late to watch To Walk Invisible. I've been on a Charlotte Bronte kick since reading Jane Eyre last Great Lent and became fascinated by her life story. Though the Bronte's story is a tragic one, I enjoyed this program very, very much.
In My Knitting Basket
I'm at the tail end of my Lenten Knit-A-Long project! There are less than ten rows left of the lace portion of my Farmhouse White Palmyre Shawl and then I can bind off and block. I can't wait to finish it!
