Seasonal Wardrobe Capsules...

Fundamentals for a Work-at-Home Wardrobe:

Fall/Winter
  • Wool coat - the length of your coat depends on the length of your skirts and dresses. If you like very long things, consider a longer coat. It will look much better then a knee length one with a lot of skirt fabric showing below the hem of the coat.
  • Jacket - Every wardrobe should contain one light-weight jacket... the fabric you choose depends on the dressy-ness/casual-ness of the rest of your clothing. If you wear mainly denim and corduroy, a jacket made from suit-like material will not work for you. Light-weight quilted jackets often look nice because they can be dressed up or down.
  • Work Bottom - whether you wear skirts, dresses, pants, or a combination, have at least one bottom in your wardrobe that you don't mind getting dirty. When you are doing jobs around the house that can harm clothing, this piece is perfect!
  • Solid Color Bottom - Choose a bottom in a solid, neutral color in a nice fabric. This piece should be comfortable, yet nice enough to dash to the store in. Knit material often works well for skirts or dresses, while wrinkle resistant chino material is nice for pants.
  • A-line skirt - This skirt should be similar to your solid color bottom, but with a bit more pizazz. Skirts that are solid colors work just as well s skirts with tweeds, floral patterns, plaids, etc.
  • Jeans - This could be literally a pair of jeans or it could be a denim skirt. For a more streamlined and chic look, choose darker washed denim with a slight stone wash.
  • Two sweaters - There are many styles to choose from and only you can decide what looks best on you. Some of the more chic choices are ribbed turtlenecks, v-neck or crew neck, or cardigans. When you choose a sweater, be sure that it fits your lifestyle (cashmere is not the best choice for a mother with babies or small children) and that it FITS!
  • Several Button-down shirts and Tee-shirts - Again, FIT is everything!
  • Bag - If you have a baby, chances are you have a diaper bag. First, ditch the one that has cartoon characters or baby designs on it and get either a plain leather tote. large handbag, or a solid color diaper bag. When you have something that is less Momma-chic , you will begin to feel a bit more elegant. If you are a woman who only needs a handbag, go for something that fits your needs as stylishly as possible. Neutral colors as best... be sure to take your size into account when purchasing a pocketbook.
  • Flats
  • To-the-knee boots
  • Pumps
  • Apron
  • Slippers
Spring/Summer
  • Tee-shirts - When you find a tee that fits you well and is comfortable, buy as many as you need. Tee-shirts are a staple!
  • Camisole - These are great for protecting modesty!
  • Cotton or Linen Petal Pushers, Skirt, and/or Dress - light-weight fabric goes a long way in the heat of the summer. Having a few bottoms in cotton or linen will ensure that you stay cool!
  • Work Bottom - whether you wear skirts, dresses, pants, or a combination, have at least one bottom in your wardrobe that you don't mind getting dirty. When you are doing jobs around the house that can harm clothing, this piece is perfect!
  • Cotton Cardigan - A perfect addition for air-conditioned rooms or cool night air!
  • Trench Coat- A light coat is a must for chilly spring mornings, and rainy weather.
  • Straw or Canvas Handbag and/or Tote - Choose lighter materials and colors in the Spring and summer
  • Sandals
  • Open-toe Dress Shoes
  • Swimsuit
  • Beach cover-up
  • Apron

This is a great list!

You know, even though I don't have children, I really liked your view on the diaper bag. I mean the baby doesn't really care.....I always thought that if I had a child (or children) I would carry a leather diaper bag and would decorate the nursery in *my* taste. Of course when the child was old enough to care then their tastes would be taken into account.

I've really worked the last few years at paring down my wardrobe. Lists like this are quite helpful!

Thanks for this list. I continually have trouble with having lots of pieces in my wardrobe that don't work together. So I end up wearing a t-shirt and jeans a lot because I can't figure something else out that works together. I'll probably use this list to help me start building a nicer wardrobe. Thanks!

Do any of you have a problem with the brown vs. black issue, especially for shoes, sweaters, and jackets? I have the worst time coordinating outfits because half my pieces go with a brown-based wardrobe and half with a black.
