Though not a fan of musicals, my husband agreed to watch
Fiddler on the Roof last night! We saw the first half, and my childhood came rushing back! We owned the tape and then cd when I was younger and my sisters and I would dance around singing the music at the top of our lungs. I must say that it was a little difficult to watch the very obvious anti-tsar propaganda though, especially since he and his family are
canonized as saints in the Orthodox Church.

The tsar and his family were canonised as passion-bearers, I suspect, because ultimately Nicholas had to be held responsible for the dreadful things that happened to innocent people during his reign. As good a person as he seemed to be personally he was still an absolute monarch, a terrible responsibility, yet one before God given the nature of the coronation service, and we cannot excuse him completely simply because he was a decent and, ultimately, a very brave man. And it is a great movie :-) and a good one because it does give an insight into an aspect of history most people would otherwise never know about.
Oh my goodness, I love Fiddler! My sister and I used to sing "Matchmaker, Matchmaker" all the time and try to recreate the choreography. Hard with only two. I bet you and your sisters would have had a better chance! ;-)
Margi,
You can read this article (http://www.roca.org/OA/14/14c.htm) for information on why Tsar Nicholas was canonized by the Orthodox Church.
We loved Matchmaker, Matchmaker the best too, Courtney! I don't think that I've seen Fr. John roll his eyes more than when that scene was on and I was singing along;)
