Reading...

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society: Thank you so much for recommending this book, Michelle! I was so good, that I am still sad (a week after finishing it!) that the story is over.

My Life in France: I began this last night and wish that I had read this first instead of starting with Julie and Julia. It is fascinating so far and makes me want to do nothing but sit and watch Julia Child on YouTube. I am really looking forward to seeing Julie & Julia!

Little Women: Mimi is to blame for this one! There are some books that just need to be reread every few years, and this is one of them!

Have you watched this?

Let us know what you think of Julie and Julia. My two oldest want to see it and I think it may be too mature in some scenes for them. I really want to see it myself.

Joyous Feast!

I am so glad that you enjoyed the book! I am planning to go see Julie & Julia before the baby is born. How did you like it? And Little Women is a classic read- Mimi is the one who recommended The Potato Peel Pie Society to me. She has great taste in books.

The Museum of American History has an exact replica of Julia's home kitchen (down to the kitchen magnets) on display (not sure til when) if you get over to DC. It is absolutely AMAZING how humble and real the kitchen is especially by today's "gourmet" kitchens.

I am that homeschool mom but I haven't heard yet when we'll be starting back with our group- I'm sure not til Sept but probably a planning meeting before then. Will definitely let you know. We also had a "dance school" with a young woman on Monday nights - I don't think this will start back til Oct. She is very good with the girls (and boy - my son took last year but I don't think he will again) and VERY reasonable compared to other similar.
Talk to you soon, Trina

Michelle and Katherine, I honestly should have stopped reading Julie & Julia. The idea was a good one and the book had entertaining parts, but it was liberally peppered with A LOT of profanity and the author complained and whined throughout the whole book.

I have higher hopes for the movie since it is a Nora Epheron one and is supposed to be a merge between Julia Child's book and Julie Powell's. I'll let you know if I am able to see it in the theater... most likely it will be dvd.

Thanks, Trina! I am looking forward to it!!

I loved The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society too!

I just finished reading The Mighty Queens of Freeville by Amy Dickinson (Ask Amy) as part of our community read. I recommend it! The author is fairly local and will be coming to our library at the end of the month. I can't wait!

You are welcome, I"m glad you are enjoying. I agree.

I also agree about "Julie and Julia" - we read it for Book Club. The book is about the marital bed, drinking and her life, with a wee bit of cooking sprinkled in. Honestly, her hobby could have been anything, not just cooking. The person who chose it for book club was *scandalized* by it and mortified that she'd chosen it.

Having said that, I want to see the movie because I think it draws much more from Julia Child's book, and will be one of those rare birds - a movie better than the book. And, it reminds me, I'd like to read it.

I loved "Guernsey..." too.

(reposted to edit so you didn't get picked up in some awful searches, I'm sorry)

I'm also re-reading Little Women (thanks to Mimi, as well) and have been thinking about picking up both Guernsey and Julie and Julia, so I'm very happy to read your reviews. I'm glad to have been forewarned about the profanity before I made the purchase. Thanks Em!

BTW, just finished The Help by Kathryn Stockett; EXCELLENT book (in my humble opinion) :)

I read Julia Child's biography last year and LOVED it! My oldest daughter and I went to see Julie and Julia last night at the movie theater and loved it too.
