Saturday...

I went out early this morning to pop into the farmers' market for a few tuberose stems (to get blessed after Dormition Liturgy on Monday morning) and a dried hydrangea bloom for the coffee table.  The children asked for kettle corn and so they scampered off to buy it while I paid for my flowers.  We had a few other errands to run and then we stayed indoors the rest of the day to escape the oppressive heat and humidity of August.

I was at loose ends tonight.  My husband was preparing for his sermon tomorrow and I'm bored with the Olympics.  I decided to watch Brooklyn and wasn't expecting much since I really didn't care for the book.  It is rare to feel that a film is better than the novel, but in my opinion, that is the case with Brooklyn.  Eilis was so much more likeable on screen than on the page.  I'm looking forward to the film adaptation of The Light Between Oceans and hope that it is as wonderful as the book is.

I shot all of the above photographs on my trusty Nikon, as opposed to my good ole' camera phone.  I've been toying with the idea of trying to really make the effort to use the Nikon for blog pictures  instead of using the ones I shoot for Instagram.  I used to pick up the camera every day to take photos, and I can see that I'm starting to loose the meager photography skills that I once had.  There are so many things that I wish I could be proficient in and make time for (gardening, homemaking, blogging, photography, drawing, knitting, cooking, baking, reading, music, etc.), but there's not much time to indulge.  Maybe doing just a little of each everyday will be enough over a lifetime.

The Little Joys...

Grandfather Bear and I were chatting today and he told me about an article he read that reported on a study on stress reducers.  According to the University of Sussex, reading something engrossing (for just 6 minutes) reduces stress by 68 percent, listening to music by 61 percent, enjoying a mug of tea or coffee reduces stress by 54 percent, and taking a walk by 42 percent.

In our fast-paced world, it is easy to feel stressed, but what I love about this study is that it proves that the anecdote to the frenzy is the simple things in life.  It is so easy to listen to a little music while making a meal, enjoy a little tea or coffee break in the afternoon while the children play, take a little stroll in the twilight, or snuggle down with a good book just before turning out the lights.  These soothing little moments in a wild day, can really make the difference, don't you think?

Favorite Things...

Not too long ago, I came upon the blog Assortment, which is written by a woman who lives with her family of five in a cabin that is 665 square feet.  I really enjoy all the posts that she writes, but my favorite ones are about their living space.  In her kitchen tour post, I loved to see all of the ways that she organized her pots, pans, dishes, and utensils.  When I came to the photograph with her Corelleware, I was completely amazed by how she stored everything so tidily! My Corelleware is always a hodgepodge of precariously stacked lids and dishes and I was always nervous that something would come tumbling down when I opened the cupboard door.  Learning to to stack the dish with the inverted lid and then putting the smaller one on top was revolutionary for me!  I love to peek into this cabinet now...  off to conquer the pots and pans and baking sheets!

How to Stride Ahead...

I stumbled upon these videos through my sister and enjoyed them a lot!  I read Tamar Adler's book An Everlasting Meal when it first came out and thought that it was such an excellent read!  After seeing her videos (there are few more on her website), I am inspired to pick An Everlasting Meal up again...  it will be nice to be read a little before we head over to the Farmer's Market later this week.

I mentioned that we were planning on listening to Archbishop Hilarion Alfeyey's Saint Matthew Passion in my Living and Learning post for March.  Though I have posted it before, now YouTube has it to listen to.  Enjoy!

Stacking Wood...

Olive Us is a weekly video series that was created by Ben and Gabrielle Blair and features their six little ones.  These short videos are very well done and show such interesting things!  I think that this one is my favorite (followed closely by Betty in Paris)!

Have you seen Jane G. Meyer's Bread Experiment?  She is our favorite Orthodox Children's Book author and it was so amazing to see her and her home and listen to her voice!  Enjoy!

The March for Life will be broadcast tomorrow, January 25th, on EWTN begining at 9:00 am EST.  You can view live streaming on the EWTN website if you don't have the channel on your television.  The Orthodox Church in America will have the largest number of Orthodox Heirarches in attendance in history.  In past years, the Metropolitan usually addresses the crowd at the rally.  It is exciting to see our beloved Metropolitan and bishops on television!
