The Very Hungry Caterpillar...

We finally got to use our bug house today!

Sugar Plum found this little guy in the grass and we were so happy to see that he matched the caterpillar in one of our favorite books, The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

I've looked online and think that he is a red humped caterpillar. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Sorry I can't help on your caterpillar identification. (I tried, and only found out that what I called "pincher bugs" growing up are more commonly called "earwigs.")

I had to laugh at your title, though, because I just picked up and reorganized two rooms of Teddy's toys, and there's a little bucket with the stuffed toy of the Very Hungry Caterpillar, the matching board book, and two other Eric Carle books—and I'm so happy to have a theme for one bucket!

You might try What's That Bug? or BugGuide.Net, both of which let you submit pictures so they can identify them for you.

I love your bucket idea, Magda!

Thanks for the links! I will check them out:)

Hello Emma,

My husband (who is an entomologist by education) thinks that what you've found is an army worm, or something very closely related. The army worm is a common name for several species of worms.

Here's a link to a picture of an army worm... http://www.progreenflorida.com/armyworm.jpg

Here's a link to some information about the worm...

Also, he wonders if you found him anywhere near a garden?
