"It's a Killdeer, Mama!"

Our little ones are very into birds lately and love to sit at the front door or in their father's office to watch the birds that flock to the feeders on our little tree.

A few months ago, I found a folding guide of birds in our area. Let me tell you, it was worth every penny! This thing is carried around everywhere! One of the things our little ones like to do is pour over it at lunch. Fortunatly, it is sand and waterproof! I love the little illustrations, descriptions, and categorization. It is much easier to use in this season of our life than a book on birds.

We have a family of Killdeer birds that live in the neighborhood and Sugar Plum can actually recognize the Killdeer birds she sees wandering around and then find the Killdeer illustration on her Folding Guide!
There are so many fun things to do with children that don't take much time, energy, or money... I hope that our children always have this much enthusiasm for learning that they do now.

Edited to Add: We haven't done too much traveling, but I think that it would be neat to buy a guide or two to take along on a trip to a different area. Since the guides are laminated, using a wipe-off marker would be a neat way to keep track of the birds, shells, butterflies, etc. that were found on the trip.

We have a similar shorebird called a ringed plover, which we get on our beaches and off-shore farmland !

I am delighted to see your young ones like birdwatching too :-)

That's so exciting she's recognizing the birds! Birdwatching is a favorite pastime around here too, and M. is learning bird calls-- the mourning dove and cowbird being the easiest right now. We have a guide that came with a recording of bird songs to make it very easy to match. Our little naturalists!

This is so wonderful! I am slowly teaching myself the different birds, but I definitely didn't learn it growing up.
