Block Crayons!

Despite always wanting to, I have never made made block crayons.  My little ones somehow heard about making them and have been asking if we could try to make them ourselves.  We had an errand to run at Hobby Lobby this morning and on a whim, we bought a large box of crayons to try our luck.  The first thing we did was to sort the crayons by color.  Next, we peeled the paper off , broke the crayons up, and divided them into a silicone baking pan.  We baked them for about eight minutes in a 275 degree oven and then cooled them in the freezer for approximately 20 minutes.  I love how they turned out!  The children immediately grabbed paper and spent lots of time coloring, which was gratifying to see.  We will be going on a few long car rides soon, so I may hide these away so that there is something exciting to do in the car.  Paired with paper and clipboards, the little ones should enjoy coloring with their new crayons a lot!

I remember making these with our children. We used the opportunity to learn about primary colors and mixing them to make secondary colors-I miss homeschooling so much!

I've always wanted to do these with my kids, too. :)

These look like so much fun! This would probably be a great idea to involve the kids in making gifts for birthdays or for goodie bags.

Also from a developmental point of view children who hold crayons with a fist benefit from using different shaped crayons like these to promote using their fingers instead.
