Playdough...

Playdough is one of the things that I can count on to calm my little ones when they are acting like wild beastlings. We like this homemade recipe and I store it in a glass pyrex container at room temperature for months on end.

Ingredients:
2 cups of plain flour
2 cups of water
1 Tbsp. of cooking oil
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup of salt

Method:
Place all of the ingredients in a medium size or large pot on medium-high heat. At this point, you can add dye to color the playdough and spices, extracts, or essential oils to scent it. Stir it until the playdough thickens. Once the dough has thickened, turn it out onto a plate or cutting board and after it cools a little, knead it until smooth.

When I was pregnant with my son, I couldn't even go near Playdoh, so I switched to home made. I make a similar recipe, but I add a few drops of essential oil into it to make it more pleasant smelling. We've done orange blossom, lavender... but our favorite was peppermint. Bonus because the latter two have anti-fungal/anti-bacterial properties.

My recipe doesn't have cream of tartar. What does it do?

We have a batch that we made with cornstarch and it has lasted for YEARS. It has Koolaid in it, so it smells really good, even several years later.

Hey, I'd love to see the cornstarch recipe. I am a HUGE fan of play-dough, but I find it gets dry pretty quick.

Thanks for the instructions. I am looking forward to trying it with some of the natural scents.
