Curly Girl Update...

Here is my hair after a few months of doing the Curly Girl routine. I really wouldn't classify it as being curly... especially since when this picture was taken, it was freshly washed and dried. As the day progresses, it tends to lose it's wave.

Despite not getting a head of cascading curls, I think that I will be continuing with the program. I like the texture of my hair on this program and think that it improves the overall "look" of my tresses. Though it sounds like a lot of work, it really hasn't been. This is what I do to my hair:

Each time I shower, I wash my hair with conditioner. On Sunday nights, I wash it with equal parts of vinegar, lemon juice, and conditioner. After I rinse that out, I rewash it with conditioner again. On Wednesdays, I wash it with 4 tablespoons of baking soda combined with 4 cups of water before I use conditioner. Once my shower is over, I scrunch my hair with a towel, spritz it with de-tangling spray and scrunch in gel. I clip up my hair while it air dries and that is it.

Looks great! I was thinking about the Curly Girl routine the other day. My hair is doing pretty well on my current regime, but it might be fun to try for a while! Did your hair go through any strange phases as you were starting?

Wow, it looks great!

I want to hear the answer to Courtney's question, that is good, thank you.

Your hair looks really pretty and feminine. I've eliminated the conditioner altogether from my hair. It now has far more wave than I am used too. Today I bought an all natural shampoo. I'm going to see what happens...

The only "side-effect" was that my scalp was a little itchy every once in a while for a week or so. I combated that by making sure to massage the conditioner into my scalp (like one would with shampoo) and that seems to have taken care of it. I would say also that for about a week, my hair was more oily than usual... though it wasn't disgusting. It will also take you a few weeks to get the hang of this hair routine.

Thanks for the update! I've been doing less shampoo/lots of conditioner, combined with the gel and pin-up routine. I haven't had the nerve to go pooless while school was still in, but will try this summer.

I think your long waves are beautiful.

So you don't shampoo your hair at all? What gets rid of the grease, sweat and old product? Your hair does look lovely and healthy though.

Hi Jen,

Check out the Young Ladies Christian Fellowship website. It talks all about how the conditioner and massaging the scalp cleans your head. The baking soda and vinegar/lemon juice/conditioner combo also cleans my scalp and hair but less harshly and with fewer chemicals.

Hi Emma - I'm a longtime lurker (and fellow mother of two little ones) who found your blog doing a search for something random and have kept visiting. Today I feel compelled to delurk and share with you the irony of your latest post as it relates to the latest post on myblog! I've just started chemotherapy, and I am in the middle of losing my sometimes-curly, brown hair. So your post hit a tender spot with me (not your fault!) as I grapple with coming to accept myself hairless for a while. Trying to find loveliness in the thick of cancer can be very challenging. :)

(Your hair looks very nice, by the way!)

Although I am not a curly girl by any means, I have taken on the No Poo challenge myself, and my hair did a oil change its self and its now getting to the point of the routine I am on that I can go several days without a washing. The fullness of my hair has changed too, its usually pretty fine and thin but seems to have "plumped" up a bit, who knows. I am really digging this though, even my 61 year old mother who is a thick curly girl through and through has taken on the curly girl theme too.lol. Have a blessed weekend.

Emma,

Does one have to have curly hair to do this? I have lots of hair, but it is all fine and straight will a little bit of wave at the ends.

Also, my 12 year old daughter has put together a beautiful blog and wants me to tell all my favorite bloggers to visit:

I tried No-Poo for about a month, but found that my curly hair was flatter and not nearly as curly...I'm going to see if I can get Curly Girl from my library. Emma, the website you reference doesn't have any information that I can see; only a link to the book. Is that correct?

Elizabeth - My hair was mostly straight and this technique brought out my wave. The author of the book claims that 65% of women have curly hair and don't know it.

Also, your daughter's link isn't working!

Choirfiend - try the other links throughout the post. The website I got my information from is The Young Ladies Christian Fellowship site.

I didn't know I had curly hair until visiting some long hair boards and the curly girl site. I actually have wavy hair, but I blew it out straight and wondered why I was left with a few cowlicks. The curly girl site has excellent advice for those of us with wave. The Long Hair Community has a typing system so you can figure out where you are on a scale from absolutely straight to very curly.
That's pretty helpful.
