Caring for Delicates...

For years I've cared for my delicates by tossing then in a little net bag which I then threw into the washing machine. Once clean, my delicates were air dried on a rack. I've never really given this routine much thought until recently purchasing new underpinnings.

Did you know that it is recommended that these delicate garments be hand washed? I didn't!

After some trial and error, I've come up with a method of hand washing these items without much effort or planning on my part. Basically, before taking a bath or shower, I put any delicates that need to be washed into the sink. I close the drain, turn on the cold water, and put a very small amount of body wash (smaller than a pea!) into the water. I quickly swish the garments around and then leave them to soak while I bathe. Once finished with my bath, I rinse my things, gently wring them out, and hang them to dry.

This is a very quick process that is much more painless than saving up these items for a week or two and washing an entire load by hand! I've found that my things look much fresher than they would if I had been washing them in the washing machine and the scent of my body wash lingers delicately on the clothing! This is a feminine ritual that can easily be added to any woman's day!

It would work well if you live in a normal house. None of our old sinks hold the water! I have a new front loading type machine which I love and it does a great job on handwash items---for me it is better than wrestling with a sink that won't hold water. Plus I have a ton of stuff that says to handwash!!

A great thing to do when rinsing out intimates is to put one or two drops of perfume in the rinse water. Be careful to add it to the water and not directly to the garment, as perfume can stain garments. The perfume leaves a nice scent on the unmentionables, as they used to be called. It makes your bathroom smell nice as well. I have found out the hard way that if you use too much, it becomes overpowering.

I do think intimates last much longer when you really do wash them by hand. But, I think some things come out fresher in the hand-wash cycle of your washer. So, I use the hand-wash cycle on my washer for some things and I rinse others as I'm preparing for bed.

Emma, this sounds like a great idea! I'll have to try it. Thanks for the inspiration.

Where do you drip it dry? I would prefer not to have these items hanging up to dry in our master bathroom every night; somehow that doesn't seem to be very attractive for my dear husband. Then again, perhaps I should invest in more delicate delicates! Hmmn. Gill.

I do hang my things on the shower rod, but I think that you could probably wring things out well using a towel and then hang in a more private place... perhaps your laundry room?
