There is not much to report on the knitting front. I was able to watch a few videos online for casting off (thanks to those of you who recommended some to me!) and finished my first washcloth! It was promptly tested out that night in the bathtub and all the little ones approved! Since I'd like a huge stack of washcloths for the bathroom, I immediately tried to cast on to my second one... remember, my sister cast onto the one I finished for me. I have been watching casting on videos all week and ripping out my work over and over again and I am still having a hard time! Hopefully one of these days it will click and I can make some progress. I was expecting to be humbled by learning a new craft and skill, but not this quickly!
I just picked up a very old copy (there is even an ancient wallpaper cover!) of Mrs. Miniver at the library this afternoon and was able to read a few pages while the baby nursed. It is my type of book... very domestic and very feminine.
Great job finishing your first dishcloth! I had such a hard time with casting on when I first started knitting and for a full year I often had to cast on for a project at least 2 or 3 times before I'd get the cast-on right and be able to move forward.

ReplyDeleteAnd to be honest, I still have trouble casting on! It always seems to take several tries and gets frustrating. But I haven't gotten it together enough to learn a new method, so that's the way it goes. I'm sure you'll get it soon!
Yeah, a washcloth is extremely handy. That's probably what I should add to my ever-growing to-do list since our present washcloths (not knitted) are getting quite old.

ReplyDeleteCongrats on your washcloth! I've been knitting steadily for 6 years now and live by the knitted-on cast-on. It's stretchier than other cast-ons and the steps are really just those of making a knit stitch. ReplyDeletecasting on was hard for me too, but it really was like a bicycle thing. once you get the feel, the rhythm, then you will do it naturally. the best is to have someone beside you that you can watch and can watch you.

ReplyDeleteThat's a very nice colour and a great photo! I taught myself to knit starting in March by watching videos on-line. I've progressed to sweaters even! Its pretty easy once you get the hang of it. Although,I a much better at un-knitting than knitting due to lots of practice!I've posted lots about my knitting if you want to come see.
