I think I'll just watch on YouTube until it's out on DVD. Have you found S&S? That's the only one I haven't had any luck locating (so far).

I saw Mansfield Park last night and thought that it was pretty good. I must confess that I did like the Frances O'Conner version better (though I haven't actually seen it in years). I will probably sit down and watch the F.O'C. version via YouTube sometime soon and see if it is as good as I remember it. You should know that I am woefully behind in reading Jane Austen... I've only read Pride and Prejudice. The rest of Austen's novels are on my reading list once I've finished the Anne books.

I agree with your assessment. I preferred the Frances O'Connor version, too, and would like to watch it again. I think that Edmund can be insufferable if he isn't played just right, and last night I couldn't figure out why Fanny would fall in love with him!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you have the Austen books to look forward to; I enjoyed most of them very much. I'm took a page from your endeavor to read all of the Anne books, and am reading Louisa May Alcott's books, starting with An Old Fashioned Girl. I recommend it!
It's so interesting to read that you prefer the O'Conner version of MP. I haven't watched the new version yet, but I remember my sister saying after her Austen book/media course in college how unlike the book the Hollywood version is. Much of it is drawn from Austen's letters and not the text of Mansfield Park and some is just conconcted. I can't say either way as this is one book I haven't made it through. I'm eager to watch the new movie now (and read the book) and see what I think!

I saw another version of Mansfield Park (I don't know if it was the O'Connor version or not), and I liked it better than the one on tv the other night. Of course, neither compare with the book. I really recommend all of Jane Austen's books; they are all so good, but my favorite is Pride and Predjudice.
ReplyDeleteI've heard so many people talk about the Anne of Green Gables books that I just bought a set to read while I recover from having this baby (if I have time!). I loved them when I was a child, and I'm sure I will again.
