Though I have watched the movies, Anne of Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea, numerous times, until this weekend I had never even cracked open the Anne books! I borrowed Green Gables from the library on Friday and am more than half way through... I love it! I have no idea why I never read the books (I know that at least one of my sisters did). Unfortunately, our library doesn't carry any of Montgomery's other Anne books, so I'll have to either inter-library loan them or buy them... either way, I plan on getting the next ones soon!

True Confessions Time...

Hi Emma! These are my absolutely favorite series of books. I can't count how many times I've read and re-read them over the years. You can often find them at a thrift store or used book store, if for some reason the inter-library loan doesn't work. I'd be happy to loan you mine too!

ReplyDeleteI found a copy of Anne of Avonlea at a charity shop last week and will be reading it this week :-)
I recommend Emily in the New Moon by the same author.

ReplyDeleteWhat?!?!? I am shocked and appalled ;) I still plan to be Anne when I grow up. I read her series about every other year and never get tired of it. I definitely think you should buy the full series so you will have it to read over and over and for your daughter to read over and over.
ReplyDeleteMy primary care physician is the director for the Center of Women's Health at a hospital around here and I one time convinced her that they shouldn't let doctors specialize in women's issues without reading Anne! LOL
And I agree Emily of New Moon is a good read too...not as great as Anne, but definitely worth your time.

I got most of my L.M. Montgomery books from eBay, very cheap.
If we're confessing, I never read them either. I recently found the audio book series FREE on librivox.org and have now "read" the first one and I'm 1/2 way through the second. I'm sorry I didn't discover them earlier- I'd have loved them as a young girl... but then I love them now too.
ReplyDeleteOoh, I love The Blue Castle just as much as Anne, I think. A Tangled Web is fantastic as well! I'll come right out and admit I own the entire Montgomery collection as well as four volumes of the journals! Hands down, she is my favorite author. It's great to see so many kindred spirits here!

ReplyDeleteI have read all of the Anne books, and most of LM Montgomery's other books too. You can read them online at www.gutenberg.com, because they're public domain. Some aren't available in the US (I think all the Anne ones are), but since I'm from Canada, I read them on the Australian site.

The books are much, much, much better than the movies... The movies make me angry, they are so far removed from the books. (The first one is great. The rest suck.) It really irritates me when film makers do that to wonderful, easily adaptable books.
ReplyDeleteAnne is wonderfl! The magic of the first time you read those books can never be repeated (although they ARE wonderful to reread and reread), so savour it!!

ReplyDeleteOooh, I also never read the series until I was pregnant with my first child. I looove them. I read them again when I was pregnant with my second. They get even better, I think, as you read on. Have fun! It is such a treat finding a new great book series to read!
ReplyDeleteI could go on about how appalled I am that you haven't read the Anne books before, . . . and yet I am a little jealous that you get to read them with the the absolute delight that comes from reading a beautiful book that you have never read before. I love the whole series (well, I all except for Rainbow valley, it's okay but not as good as the others). And I ADORE Anne's house of dreams, and Rilla of Ingleside (but have tissues nearby!)
