St. Nicholas Center Website...

If you are planning on celebrating Saint Nicolas Day this year (December 6th), you might want to check out The Saint Nicholas Center website. In addition to a shop (where I got a Ukrainian version of a Saint Nicolas cookie cutter), there are lovely stories about St. Nicolas, craft ideas, lists of way to celebrate the feast, and more. We are planning on putting out our shoes again this year and baking some cookies. What special things do you do to celebrate the day?

  1. Wow. I had typed a long comment and Blogger deleted it! Sigh... anyway, I find the site you linked very resourceful too. I haven't totally firmed up our plans for St. Nicholas Day, but we'll be putting out our shoes and going to Mass for sure. I'm also hoping to get my hands on a book I used while teaching on St. Nicholas cookies. I hope I find it in time.

  2. Hah! Found it buried in the lists at the SNC. I forgot to mention, rather than candy for DS this year, he's receiving a set of board books on the faith and his own Rosary (not the one with lead!). They should arrive today. I'm so excited!

  4. Hi Jamie!

When we were expecting our first, I surprised my husband by putting out our shoes and adding a tiny pair of baby slippers next to our "big" shoes. It was really cute:)

  5. Here in Belgium, Saint-Nicolas is quite a big event. Everyone celebrates it with lots of candy and presents. As we are a bit too old at home to celebrate Saint-Nicolas, we just have a special Saint-Nicolas breakfast, with lots of chocolate. This year we will invite my little nephews over to join us. It will be so much fun!
In our student group we will also be celebrating Saint-Nicolas. As both Dutch and Belgian students attend, we will focus on all the little differences between the two traditions.
This is how Saint-Nicolas looks like over here: http://www.sintleersum.nl/images/bennosintstuntel%5B1%5D.jpg
Saint-Nicolas isn't a relgious holiday here anymore, but rather a commercial one. It's big business.
I think I will write a post on it on december 6, as this comment is getting very long.

  6. Thanks for the link! That site looks great. I live alone so I won't be doing much, but maybe I'll bake some cookies. :)

  7. When the boys were little we celebrated st. Nicholas day. This was the day they received new crucifix for their walls or religious books, a New Bible etc. Have fun and I can't wait to see what you do!
